India Mountain Biking: Himalayan Trails Guide

India offers Himalayan singletrack at altitudes few countries can match. Bir Billing and Manali anchor a small but growing scene built around old shepherd paths, forest roads and pine-covered ridgelines in Himachal Pradesh.

India's mountain biking scene is concentrated in the Himalayan foothills of the north, with Himachal Pradesh acting as the unofficial centre of gravity. Bir Billing, better known as a paragliding hub, doubles as a quiet enduro base with forested singletrack dropping from ridges above the Tibetan colony. Manali, further up the Kullu Valley, opens onto bigger alpine terrain, old jeep tracks toward Solang and the Rohtang area, and shoulder-season access into Lahaul once the high passes clear. Expect rough, hand-built trails, mixed surfaces and altitudes that regularly sit between 1,500 m and 3,000 m.

The scene is small but real. A handful of local guides, shuttle operators and shops run out of Bir, Manali and Shimla, and events like the Hero MTB Himalaya stage race have run in Himachal for over a decade. Bike rentals exist but quality varies, so serious riders often bring their own machine. Outside the Himalayas, pockets of riding exist in the Western Ghats around Pune and Mussoorie-Dehradun in Uttarakhand, but the deepest mountain terrain remains in the north.

Timing matters. The Indian monsoon hits the Himalayas roughly mid-June to mid-September, soaking trails and triggering landslides on mountain roads; many high passes including Rohtang close in winter, typically November to April or May. The clearest riding windows are April to mid-June and mid-September to October, when trails are dry, skies are open and the high country is still accessible. Spiti and Ladakh extend the season at altitude but require acclimatisation above 3,500 m.

Most visitors enter India on an e-Visa, available online for many nationalities; check current eligibility before booking. The currency is the Indian rupee (INR), and cash is still useful in mountain villages even as UPI dominates the cities. English is widely spoken alongside Hindi, with Himachali dialects in the hills. Delhi is the main international gateway; from there it is an overnight bus or a short flight to Kullu-Manali, plus a road transfer to Bir. Mountain roads are slow, narrow and shared with trucks, so build buffer days into any itinerary.
